Blossoms in Adversity Review

My review on Blossoms in Adversity starring Zhang Jing Yi and Hu Yi Tian comes a little late. This drama premiered in the 2nd quarter of the year and I didn’t plan to watch it but my sister recommended it to me. I love recommendations with no spoilers so I decided to watch it and see if it’s really worth it. Is Blossoms In Adversity worth watching? Maybe, maybe not

Blossoms in Adversity Review
Our Score

I watched all 40 episodes and the story is good but I won’t say it is one of the best. I didn’t get much of stories related to politics. I preferred the Hua storyline over others. Let’s just say the political storylines in this drama aren’t that interesting and a bit lacking.

So it all starts with the Emperor who somehow punishes the Hua family and the exiles the men in the family to the north. There’s no clear reason why and I still watched. This whole situation also led to the involvement of Yanxi in the storyline and it still confuses me more. The relationship between Yanxi and the emperor and the rest of the royal family is just confusing, I won’t lie. I understood some parts here and there and I tried paying more attention to them. It was just hard to follow, they do stuff without explaining it fully in the future.

I was cool with the story when Yanxi was investigating his mother’s death. After he had completed his investigation, I didn’t understand other cases. One moment everything is cool, the next someone is getting imprisoned, what’s the reason? They don’t explain much and you have to guess.

Now let’s talk about the main storyline which is about the Hua women. Since Hua’s men are all exiled, women and children are left alone to survive. Their property was confiscated and had nothing. They had to do everything on their own but we are talking about the old times. In that era, women depended on men to do most stuff and they only handled household matters.

For the Hua women, it was a challenge because they depended on men. I was interested in seeing how they would survive on their own. This was the only reason why I sacrificed my time to watch this drama, I could’ve watched some Wednesday series on Netflix. I’m just kidding, I’m a cdrama fan for life.

There isn’t much to say about the story, it isn’t something explosive like The Double. It’s all about the survival of the Hua women and the challenges they face as they rise from the bottom all by themselves while being led by Hua Zhi. This is my opinion by the way and I can say Blossoms In Adversity and Dream Of Splendor are the same. They just have some minor differences here and there.

Hua Zhi Is Unbreakable

Speaking about Hua Zhi, this drama was originally named Hua Zhi or The Story of Hua Zhi. You obviously know Hua Zhi will always be the hero in every situation. She will be the one who comes up with ideas and helps other people. This is not a spoiler, it happens in similar dramas but I have my own complaints. You see, Hua Zhi is an overrated character and I would even say I started to dislike this character a little when the story hit episode 20 upwards. I was getting bored of her because it’s always the same thing about her. She’s always in every commotion. She’s always in every scene. She’s always involved in every case. There’s no case that didn’t involve Hua Zhi. If it didn’t involve her in the first place, she would get herself involved.

Every situation was predictable, Hua Zhi would survive. There’s no moment that will make you worry about her. We have seen many dramas like this, The Legend of Shen Li, The Legend of Fuyao, The Legend of Yunxi, Princess Weiyoung, The Legend Of Fei and Jun Jiuling. All these dramas tell a story about one female character who set the bar high, but they weren’t unbreakable. They didn’t win each and every battle. There was a time Fuyao nearly lost her life and some of her plans failed. There was a time Weiyoung thought she saw through some evil schemes but she fell for it. Jun Jiuling also experienced the same challenges. Hua Zhi on the other side, is unbreakable. She even raised her voice to the emperor and called him a coward but she left unharmed.

I got mad at her when they were ambushed and Yanxi told her to leave with others. She just decided to go back to Yanxi and stick her nose in their business again. She doesn’t know how to fight but she’s involving herself only to get saved by Yanxi from multiple attacks. She got me mad at that moment.

Other Things To Mention

I have to say, they picked the right kid to play the young Hua Zhi. Young Hua Zhi does look like a grown-up Hua Zhi. The transition between them was on point too.

This drama has an unexpected ending song. It’s like they randomly picked a song on their playlist and placed it on the ending theme. I liked the opening song, it’s catchy and complements the drama theme.

Conclusion

Blossoms in Adversity has a happy ending. They all got what they wanted but I have a confession to make. I somehow lost interest in the drama around episode 30 because it was all about wedding arrangements and the political stuff which were confusing. Even now, I don’t fully understand anything that was related to the emperor and politics but that wasn’t the main story. There’s no use in stressing about them, life is too short for that. This review is only my opinion about Blossoms in Adversity. You can tell me yours in the comments.
