It’s been a while since Strange Tales Of Tang Dynasty season 2 premiered. I’m a huge fan of this kind of dramas and this one has been on my list. This strange tales of tang dynasty season 2 review will be different, I will breakdown the review case by case. You can watch it here
Opening Theme
The graphics of the opening theme were awesome. The team never disappoints when it comes to creepy opening themes. Strange Tales Of Tang Dynasty 1 had one of the best opening theme, season two just took it to another level. I mean, man! The graphics of a sword moving like a snake with patterns that looks like one of a snake. The hissing sound mixed with the sound of a sword was so creative. Mad concept with the opening theme.
The opening theme automatically invites you, like it’s telling you “we no longer playing here, put your phone down and pay attention”. What I noticed about Strange Tales Of Dynasty S1 is the opening theme is made up of the elements from the sagas in the drama. If you see a black dragon, there will be a case related to it somehow. Even for season 2, I quickly guessed some of the cases just from watching the opening theme. Again, dope opening theme for the year so far.
Mara’s Defeat Case
This case involved the Mara’s Defeat painting at the temple which was painted by Qin Xiaobai. He’s a well known painter and the princess hired him to paint Mara’s Defeat. So the case revolved around the painting. The strange things happening around Chang’an at this time looked like they came from the painting.
For me as someone who has watched a lot of Detective Di movies and also Strange Tales Of Tang Dynasty 1, I wasn’t surprised by the case. What I was interested in was knowing how they pulled those strange magic acts. I mean, that’s what season 1 was about.
The case was also a way of reuniting our two favorite investigators, the two students of Detective Di. I’m talking about Su Wuming and Lu Lingfeng. But Lu Lingfeng somehow appeared to be a bit weak when he started investing this case. One could say he can’t investigate without Su Wuming. As I followed along the case, I began to like Qin Xiaobai’s character, he cracked me up.
I’m kind of disappointed by the closure of this case. Even though they did explain most things, they left out some information. But so far, this case got me interested in continuing with the drama.
The death of the coroner
This one already explains itself. Although there’s nothing creepy about it, the case was a bit strange. Why am I always focusing on creepy stuff? Anyways, this case was a bit long and they played around the clues for a while. It was hard to predict, because it had 4 suspects and additional murders involved. I just loved how they switched between suspects, each interrogation gave new clues and also made it unpredictable. I also liked how they concluded the case, totally unexpected.
The case was also a way to reunite our heroes after a small misunderstanding.
Mo’s Inn In A Snowstorm
There isn’t much to say about this case. I take it as a filler case because it felt normal. Ofcorse there’s a build up to the main storyline but it wasn’t that big. It was also a quick case and it reminded me of Justice Bao, even though I didn’t finish the drama.
Qianchong Dock
This case is about Qianchong Docka and it revolves around imperial censors. It only took about two episodes so I don’t really have much to say about it. But it did raise some curiosity when the mentioned the sect leader. Who’s this sect leader they were talking about? That’s a build up for the final case like the did in season 1. Anyways I loved the smooth transition into the Tongtian Rhino case since they’re related.
Tongtian Rhino
I don’t want to drop spoilers on who did what and all those stuff so I’ll leave some stuff for you to watch. This case was super interesting. At first I thought it would be another quick filler case from the way it was presented but I was wrong. As I said, there’s always a link between these cases and this one was linked to the previous one because of Taiyin sect.
This is where the question in the previous case were answered and we get a more deeper insight on this sect. I can’t say it was a predictable case, I didn’t even want to guess the next move. I just wanted to concentrate and see how it goes. There was a lot of stuff happening in this case that made me go crazy but I don’t want to drop spoilers. I also loved how they brought Lu Lingfeng and Linghu Shou. Their dialogues were so entertaining and I think they brought the best in each other.
Drunk in Yuding
This has to be one of my favorite cases in this drama. At this point, our stars have reached their destination and Lu Lingfeng has to report for work. Everything about Yuding is different from other cities we have seen so far. Even the magistrate office operates differently. Getting drunk in Yuding is normal, that’s why the case title is Drunk in Yuding. Yuding is literally Fei’s paradise since there’s wine everywhere. One strange thing about this place is people are disappearing in large numbers. Then there’s the immortal steps place which is strange and creeps me out everytime they show it.
Letter from Shangxian Hall
Okay, this one was a tough one. It was also challenging for Lu Lingfeng and Su Wuming. This also got me doing my own investigations and checking who’s the suspect. The little detective in me couldn’t even figure come up with a theory, poor me. Anyways, this case wasn’t confusing but it was strange. Another murder in the inn with multiple suspects and an unexpected cause of death. This was like watching a Scooby Doo film. In the end, I got a case I always wanted. I always wanted a case that will put both Lu Lingfeng and Su Wuming in a tight spot where they have to choose between being officials or humans.
Provider
This is the last case for the second season and it’s more like a filler case as they start a new journey back to Chang’an. I don’t have much to say about this case because I’ll end up dropping spoilers in every line.
Strange Tales Of Tang Dynasty Ending
So far, Strange Tales Of Tang Dynasty 2 has a cliffhanger ending. They’re traps that are laid for Lu Lingfeng, Su Wuming and the squad on their way back to Chang’an. We don’t know how they will survive those traps or how they will survive living in Chang’an. I mean, they were already causing trouble in Chang’an before they went to the west. This time it will be a tough battle for all parties. Even in the palace, things are not yet stable. Who’s good and who’s bad is still the biggest question. They don’t reveal all cards. We’ll see what happens in Season 3.
Will There Be Strange Tales Of Tang Dynasty Season 3?
Strange Tales Of Tang Dynasty Season 3 is indeed on the way and I’m patiently waiting to see what kind of strange cases we will witness there.
Conclusion
I enjoyed watching this drama and also loved seeing Xue Han being part of the squad. I do wish he gets more involved in the third season. Also, they keep delaying the marriage between Lu Lingfeng and Xijin, and Su Wuming and Yingtao. Speaking of Yingtao, she had more screentime than in season one and I liked her character. Strange Tales Of Tang Dynasty Season 2 is highly recommended.
