Oh boy, I finally watched Fox Spirit Matchmaker: Red Moon Pact starring Yang Mi and Gong Jun and I just wanted to review it. I’m a fan of Yang Mi and this has been one of the upcoming dramas I’ve been looking forward to but it didn’t deliver.
Story
The biggest reason why I dropped this drama is the story, I didn’t like the story at all. I didn’t even know where it was heading to. In the beginning it was boring but I thought it would get better as time goes but it got worse. I started watching this drama on 30th June and two weeks later I still haven’t finished. I couldn’t manage to watch two episodes without falling asleep.
The story was about the spirits and humans coexisting. It also involves Yue Chu and Tushan Hong hong who play a role in uniting spirits and humans. There’s also the spirit lord who used to be the ruler of Tushan but was defeated by Tushan Hong to take over Tushan and restore peace.
On paper, it sounds great but your energy drains the moment you watch the drama. The storyline is dragging and there’s no sense of direction. Spirit lord is always doing childish and predictable schemes while everyone falls for it. It became too predictable when they started to repeat the same schemes over and over again with the bad guys escaping in the end.
There was this scene where Honghong was saving Gong Jun and she had this epic and badass entrance. I thought she was going for the k!ll but it was all for nothing. Jin Renfang was protected by plot armor and I don’t get why they do this while they know Jin Renfang was going to run unharmed. This is what happened in Love and Redemption when they let Hu Tong go. I know these kinds of characters will play an important role as the story develops but why huge moves if nothing will happen?
All that, they even forgot about the Dongfang blood which Jin Renfang was seeking in the first arc. They made the blood so precious only for its value to drop halfway through the story. Now, all Yue Chu does is chase after Hong hong.
Another thing, what was going on with Dongfang Luo? I got to the part of him being a spy and being exposed but it doesn’t make sense. That’s where I’m leaving it.
Characters
All the negatives aside, the characters were amazing and they had good costumes. I mean, they’re just following the script given to them so we can’t blame a weak script on them. I’m just happy to see Yang Mi and Zhu Xudan together in another drama. It reminded me of Ten Miles to Peach Blossoms
No Lead Chemistry
I honestly don’t feel any chemistry between the leads. I can’t stand the fact that Hong hong is over 400 years old but she’s falling in love with someone who’s 24 years old. It’s weird watching Yuechu chasing after her while calling her “Jie Jie” (sister). What’s worse, it was Hong hong who raised him for 16 years. It got much worse when he started calling her “Hong hong”, it felt forced. It’s totally hard to watch. I can’t stomach it. It would’ve been better if she didn’t raise him because this current situation gives me pedophile vibes. Hong hong should be a mother figure or sister figure to Yuechu, not a lover.
Yang Mi was dubbed
They dubbed Yang Mi! This is a big no no! It’s weird watching Yang Mi and not hearing her real voice. I do understand that her voice won’t fit the character she’s portraying in the drama, but dubbing her is weird.
Another Complaint
Some other things don’t sit well with me and I have to voice them out. Firstly, in some episodes, the voices don’t match with the characters’ lips when they speak. Secondly, some scenes expose themselves. You might be watching two people fighting them suddenly one of them is on the ground and you don’t know how. They cut scenes a lot and it ends up boring the viewers.
I unfortunately dropped this drama on episode 24/25 because I felt like I was wasting my time with it. I couldn’t see myself finishing it. I’m a fan of Young Mi, but this time, I have to be honest. This drama was a disappointment and I just wish she doesn’t pick such projects in the future.
