Follow Your Heart Review
Our Score

I love the storyline. I love the sequencing of events to build up a story pyramid. The writers didn’t mess up the process of linking plots together. I loved every bit of the storyline. I won’t lie, at the beginning, I thought this would turn out to be another drama with a weak storyline. I thought it would get boring along the way because of the way it started. It started with Jiang Xinbai investigation the case of zornia which is banned in the country and it’s also a poison by the way. This is where Jiang Xinbai met Yan Nanxing in Hebei.

That chapter of Jiang Xinbai investigating dealers of zornia and General Nan, seemed like it was the main plot. The way it was presented onscreen made it look like they had nothing special to offer after the chapter. What will happen when Jiang Xinbai caught the mastermind on that chapter? The story will be boring even if the writers hang on Jiang Xinbai’s fake identity and his encounter with Yan Nanxing. But that was all my take on the drama when I watched the first episodes. I already had bad luck when it comes to choosing good dramas this year, I thought this was another ‘bad’ drama.

I was wrong and I have to give my flowers to the authors and scriptwriters. There’s something special about the storyline itself but I was more impressed by the connection between events. From the Hebei investigation, to general Nan and Gaya’s involvement in the story. It was a smooth ride and a creative way of taking us from Hebei to the Capital where the magic happens. Everything that happened in Hebei was a foundation of the story pyramid. Gaya’s death didn’t make much sense in Hebei until we got to introduced to the Capital. The writers used these kind of events was transitions to the next chapter. It’s just like when you’re editing a travel video, you add transitions to create a smooth sail between two events. Not many writers can use that trick.

When we entered the Capital chapter, the story pyramid moved to a new upper layer. The subplots in the chapter helped to build new layers. More like using a stepladder to climb a house, each step takes you one step closer to the top. So here, the writers were using events such as Shang Beli and Jiang Xinbai’s feud, Yan Nanxing and Jiang Xinbai’s misunderstandings. Yan Nanxing opening up the Blossom Beauty shop which became a game changer for the entire storyline. Not to forget Yan Nanxing’s shape shifting plot which was also slowly linking with the main storyline. They also used Jiang Xinbai and Jiang Suoluo’s sibling rivalry to create subplots that also helped build another layer of the story pyramid. Each episode had something to offer and it was moving us closer to the top of story pyramid. This is the creative trick they used until the last episode. I loved it, but nothing is perfect.

Plot holes

Skip this part if you don’t spoilers because I’ll spill one or two. There are some plot holes or events that doesn’t make sense to me. Ofcorse I know that when you’re watching a Cdrama you just have to leave logic outside something. Some things will never make sense like someone who’s eating a medicine now and immediately wakes ups. I just have few things to mention.

I fail to understand why Bai Yuechu doesn’t like Yan Nanxing. She was against her from the very beginning and there was no clear reason why. I did think it was because she had a crush on Jiang Xinbai. Sometimes they made it look like she’s jealous of Yan Nanxing because she’s close with Jiang Xinbai’s mother. There’s no real reason behind their feud.

I also don’t understand how come Yan Nanxing gives off modern vibes. She’s just like Fan Xian from Joy Of Life, as if she travelled to the past. She can do plastic surgeries, which is something that wasn’t known in the past. She managed to give Shang Beli a plastic nose and gave Chief Bai a fake eye. She knows medical skills but she excels in the facial beauty field. Is she a time traveller? I don’t know, I don’t read novels these dramas are adapted from but it’s just my take. Why would she know plastic surgery?

No need to predict the future

I don’t know about others but I have the habit of always trying to predict the story outcomes. It’s rare for me to watch a drama and just enjoy the ride without predicting anything. I found myself going with the flow of the writers. I didn’t think much about the future outcome, I just wanted to watch what’s currently happening and feast on that feeling. The only time when I made a prediction was when I predicted who the mastermind was. At that time I already passed 30 episodes.

Dialogue Error

Episode 22 they mixed up the timeline on a dialogue. Jiang Xinbai got hurt today and then there was a 10 day time skip plus another day, making it 11-12 days. But then on a dialogue between Suoluo and Shang Beli, there was an error. Suoluo mentioned an event that took place the day Jiang Xinbai got hurt. The problem is she said “five days ago” instead of “11-12 days ago”. Like how did we suddenly move from 10 days later to five days ago?

Follow Your Heart Ending

Follow Your Heart has a happy ending with three couples getting married on the same day. You will have to watch the drama if you want to know who is getting married. I loved the way they closed the last episode with a clip of the cast having fun. It brings a positive feeling to us as viewers because sometimes when you finish watching this dramas, you happen to have a connection with the characters. Seeing the cast dancing and having fun allows you to have a sigh of relief and say ‘finally, we made it’. You get me?

Conclusion on Follow Your Heart Review

I should’ve watch this drama earlier but I didn’t think it would be this good. It’s been a while since I watched a drama this entertaining. I loved the cast, the costume designs (especially wedding costumes) and even the storyline. I do recommend it if you haven’t watched it yet. The story is easy to follow and digest, there’s nothing complicated. The story doesn’t drag, there is always something else to offer. You should watch it.
