First Impressions
My first impressions are only based on five episodes; that’s how I determine whether I should continue with the drama or not. The first five episodes were interesting, I was hooked from the beginning. It was nice to see Bai Lu again since Till The End Of The Moon and also Ao Rui Peng, I’m a fan of both.
The opening theme was what hooked me in the first place. My expectations grew as I was watching the opening theme; it had all these dialogues from various scenes that would come up as the story progresses. This is the same style they used with The Story Of Kunning Palace; they mix dialogues with the opening theme, and it builds the suspense. I don’t get tired of watching these kinds of opening themes. By the way, Sa Ding Ding never disappoints with OSTs.
The Storyline
From the get-go, the storyline was on point. It begins with an incident that happened when Bai Shuo and Bai Xi were young, and then we get to see how Bai Xi left and went missing. Then, Sa Ding Ding (Master Sun, Master of Guanze Hall) sent Bai Shuo to meet Fan Yue. And that was the beginning of everything, or should I say the resume of what happened in 60,000 years ago.
The entire storyline revolves around Bai Shuo and the contemplation stone. She was on a mission to gather five contemplations. Each contemplation had its own plot, which connected to the main storyline, and I loved the uniqueness of each plot. They had good stories to tell, the investigations were the ones keeping me invested in the drama. They sparked the curious cat in me, I wanted to know what will happen next.
There were also other subplots that contributed a lot in the drama and that was the story between Chong Zhao and Fu Ling. This is a story that I enjoyed. Fu Ling was cold to everyone except Chong Zhao. Their journey from Ning’an to the Cold Spring Palace is more entertaining than some parts of the main storyline. I always paid attention to those two whenever they were on screen.
Another subplot is about Zhen Yu, who is the key character in everything. I might end up dropping spoilers if I continue to talk about him. Then there’s the story of other dieties. I won’t talk much about it but I will explain something I didn’t like about it.
Regarding pacing, some of the plots were rushed, while some were well-paced, but I really didn’t have much of a problem with it. There were some unnecessary scenes, especially with Bai Shuo and Fang Yue.
What I didn’t like
The first thing I didn’t like is the endless deaths in the drama. A lot of characters died at the end of each ‘contemplation’ chapter, and it got to a point where everything was predictable and got boring. I don’t get why people would die for the sake of Bai Shuo achieving her goal, people sacrificed themselves in almost every three episodes. The author was on a killing spree with this one. I didn’t like the ending too, I will discuss it after this.
Secondly, I didn’t like the power Bai Shuo had in the drama. I don’t remember seeing Bai Shuo lose; she is always the smartest and always gets out of any trouble.
Thirdly, they nerfed Fang Yue when the drama was about to end, he became a weakling and powerless. Even with divine powers, it never helped to make him powerful again. He was too weak compared to what he was at the beginning.
Lastly, Bai Shuo is Xing Yue: Goddess of Lunar Race. Owner of Desireless Stone. Others did awaken the dieties in them but then what about Xing Yue? Why haven’t we seen her?
Moonlight Mystique Ending
Moonlight Mystique Chinese Drama has a happy ending, but I didn’t like the ending. The reason why I didn’t like the ending is because of what happened in the last five minutes of episode 40. Why were main leads the only ones who had a happy ending while they weren’t the only ones who sacrificed themselves to save the world? A lot of people die and they only decided to revive the male lead only, what about others?
Moonlight Mystique Review Conclusion
Moonlight Mystique is good but it would have been better if they didn’t kill many characters for no reason. It’s like they were only placing everything on Bai Shuo and Fang Yue, they had to use everyone as a stepping stone. Other than that, I do recommend it, there were moents where I got goosebumbs from watching this drama.
